METHODS OF
DOCUMENTATION &
MEASURED DRAWINGS
Between the intervening of semester two and semester three, I have a course of semester 2.5 that allows me to learn the importance of preserving and conserving buildings and learning the methods of recording it into three different documentation methods: measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. At the beginning of the project, I have team up with Leo (Koo Jian Xiang), Claudia (Tan Jingwei), Sasha (Nurul Sahira), Yoshiiko (Lim Xiu Qing), Wei Zheng, Aimuni, Rain (Vun Tze Lin), Jia Ling, Boss (Yan Jie), Zhe Khai and Theresa (Thia Ai Min). At first, we were tasked to measure and document the Snail House in Malacca near Jonker Street, but due to unseen circumstances, our building changes to the Ang Boutique that lies along the Jalan Bunga Raya.
During the trip, we work hard, play hard. We went to the site and after we introduced ourselves to the shop tenant, we straight started measuring the building. The top part of the building was abandoned and everything in there was dusty and under-preserved. The poor environment did not stop us from doing our job and we continue to carry out our task. Along are some photographs that show us measuring the building and followed by my individual journal sketches on site.

After we came back from Malacca with all our documented info and measurements, we started drawing, tracing and modeling out our building. A big thanks to Wei Zheng, Sasha, Claudia and Aimuni as they did most of the vital drawings that affects the other part of the project. They stayed up late and overnight to help us finish up the drawings and make sure everything was accurate and we are able to process the data during laser cutting and modeling. Below are the drawing they have completed.

As I help to manage the cadding team, Leo manages the report team. From the beginning, they started way before we went to Malacca to gather some information, so that we have some slight clue on what we are researching on. Leo and Rain help to compile everything into one single file and make it presentable and they did a very good job at it. Following slides are everyone’s effort and the added a twist of both of their design and arrangement.
Leo also manages to solo the video and photobook himself with the aid of Theresa and Yoshiiko for some minor filming and photographing. He did the video very professionally and arrange the photobook in a very nice manner. Below are his effort on completing it.

I was tasked to manage the model and make sure the model is presentable with the help of Theresa, Yoshiiko and Yue. As our building is very small, we decided to make it as detailed as possible. By having detail model, the louvers on the wooden windows are not laser cut and have double movable layer for glass window for realistic details. As Aimuni and I are also tasked to manage the laser cutting part, we decided to layer the walls to show the defects and dilapidation. We also added lighting for our model to show different sections of the model with the help of Boss (Yang Jie) and Zhe Khai on soldering the circuit. Below are some images that showcase the model itself.

Overall, even though we are the smallest group among other groups, I would say we did a great job and a very satisfied one. Along the journey, we all learn here and there, learning to compensate, developing understanding, knowing priorities and picking up responsibility. It was a long way to go but we all did it and able hurdle over every obstacle we came across. Good job, lads, good job.
